British government not withdrawing citizens free of charge through chartered flights: British High Commissioner



Islamabad: There are 1 million Britons in Pakistan revealed that they are waiting for a return home, says the High Commissioner who will have to pay rent for return.

According to ARY News, British High Commissioner Christian Turner posted in Islamabad said at a video link press conference that flights to bring back British citizens from around the world are not free, passengers have to pay rent.

The British High Commissioner said that there are about one million British citizens in Pakistan, adding that the first priority is the return of those who are elderly or potentially feared ill.The High Commissioner spoke to Pakistani journalists in the UK over the video link and said they were in contact with the PIA and would withdraw 4,000 British citizens within 5 days. Christian Turner also thanked the government of Pakistan and PIA officials, who said that PIA fares are better than other airlines.

He said there was a misconception among the people that the British government was taking people back on chartered flights for free, but this is not true, chartered plane passengers also have to pay rent. On the question of ARY News, he said that the passengers inside who have been diagnosed with the Karuna virus are taking full responsibility of the government of Pakistan keeping them in isolation so it will not be possible for them to return to the UK during the illness.

He added that it is the PIA's responsibility to monitor the safety of passengers while traveling. Christian Turner said that people who are not British citizens but have a UK visa are also not allowed to travel to the UK in the days of the outbreak.
